Sorik Marapi is a mountain that is included in the Batang Gadis National Park, administratively located in the village of Sibanggor Julu, Puncak Sorik Marapi District, Mandailing Natal Regency, North Sumatra. Sorik Marapi is an active volcano with a height of 2,145 meters. The coordinates of the mountaintop are 0 ° 41 '11 "latitude and 99 ° 32' 13" east.
At its peak there is a volcanic lake. This mountain has erupted seven times. Respectively in 1830, 1879, 1892, 1893, 1917, 1970, 1986 and finally in 1987. In the last eruption, Sorik Marapi spewed hot dust and lava that flowed to Pasaman Regency in West Sumatra.
Gunung Sorik Marapi is one of the mountains that falls into the normal active category, therefore this mountain is continuously observed for its activity. Gunung Sorik Marapi Volcano Observation Post is located in the village of Sibanggor Tonga, Puncak Sorik Marapi District.
From 2013 around the Sorik Marapi Mountain, a giant project is being carried out by PT SMGP / OTP Sorik Marapi, a geothermal energy utilization project.
